hype over designer | Because Designer Means Nothing.

Would you rather be underpaid or overrated? The question at-hand seems to popularize itself amongst today’s pretentious celebrity personas and the FOPS (friends on payroll) who gas their egos behind anything they do or create (Well, some pretend to create ). A prime example of the faux hypebeast cult can be seen through the Champion seams of brands such as Pyrex Vision, Hood by Air, and Les Plus Dores. In the event that you have never heard of either of these brands, Google Images is a great introduction that will lead you to jaded lookbooks that reflect cliques of friends, entourages, or again FOPS attempting to appear…cool. Pyrex Vision will provide a taste of the not-so-cool kids who want to be the cool kids, donning gym shorts, t-shirts, sweatshirts, socks, bandanas, and probably even bumper stickers (if requested, that is) that display the name Pyrex, Caravaggio paintings, and the famous numeric value that is twenty-three for Mr. Jordan. Innovative? No. Trendy? No, but if hype beasts can make recycled Jordans be a hot topic four weekends per month…then anything is possible. Well, thanks to PV’s creator, Virgil Abloh, a close friend of Kanye West, being a close friend of Kanye West, it is safe to say that PV has created the largest bandwagon of streetwear and idiots are paying a high ass price to ride at the tail of that wagon. $100.00-$275.00 to be exact but hey, who’s counting. Honestly, this obsessive hype over designer phase in fashion is a heinous sight to witness. If you can screen-print a tee, then the world is supposed to call you a designer. If your BFF is a world icon – he can wear your shit and it can be called iconic…crazy, right?. But, in the meantime, what happens to the young, talented designers who don’t have famous best-friends to put them on? How do they create a bandwagon worth riding if no one wants to ride because there’s no overrated, egotistical gasoline available? Design may not mean anything to the youth who always wants to win but I have a few words to share to these blind sheep: born by the hype, die by the hype because trends remain trends until...well, the next hype.
